BENCHMARKS vs. SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES

Hi Folks:

There was some confusion in assessment #2 about short-term objectives and benchmarks. The significant difference is that a benchmark is written to typically be met before an IEP expires. For example, let's say that an IEP was developed on October 1 and will then expire in 364 days. Here's what a short-term objective might look like...

STO: When using a therapy mirror, Bill will increase his correct production of the initial "t" sound from 50% in isolation to 90% in isolation.

here's what that same target might look like if written as a benchmark...

BENCHMARK: By the end of 2nd quarter, Bill will increase his correct production of the initial "t" sound from 50% in isolation to 90% in isolation when using a therapy mirror.

Hi Class:

Please read the SEDU 515 IEP Overview Sheet 2009 posted to Educator under the Course Announcement - click on Course Overview Chart SEDU 515. Please become familiar with the week of 7/21 expectations. One change - note that there won't be teamwork in this course - thus any team assignments (if noted) will be individual assignments.

My general expectations for this course...

Read the syllabus!
Explore Educator - understand the tabs
Submit your assignments by the deadlines. Since this is a short course, it is imperative that you don't fall behind -
You'll have one attempt to complete each quiz
You will have the opportunity to revise and re-submit your Assessment #1, #2, #4 and #7. I will grade your original submissions and return them to you prior to the end of the course - ideally with at least a week for you to complete a revision. It is your decision as to whether or not you want to submit a revision for consideration of a higher grade. All revisions are due no later than Sunday, August 8.
If you have questions for the group, note them for the July 28 WIZIQ session
You can submit your assignments via the Assignments tab on Educator (preferred), or attach them to an email sent to me at dpperrodin@stritch.edu and note the assignment name and due date in the subject
My goal for this course is to increase your knowledge base and comfort zone with IEPs - not to make you an IEP guru. This course will also empower you to be a more productive IEP team member and advocate for student needs.
Ask me anything! I've been a special education director for the past 7 years. I won't have all the answers, but I'll give you my perspective.
Finally, every school district has its own approach to IEPs. Your district might have a different spin on a few IEP elements versus what you learn in this course. There are different ways to create a compliant IEP.

Welcome to Developing IEPs - a one credit online course with Cardinal Stritch University!
